Creative exploration of observational and inventive drawing within the summer series "Fire, Light, and Color" at the University of Toledo Center for the Visual Arts.  Topics will  deal with contemporary concepts of drawing in art with students applying their knowledge of representation and compositions to develop thinking and creative expression with varied media. FIRE: students will explore time, movement, and gesture while drawing from various illuminated objects such as candles and bonfires looking at art historical precedents of artists who drew on and with fire.  LIGHT: students will push the limits of value in drawing to examine the extreme principles of chiraoscuro through light and dark like the iconoclastic, mysterious, and alleged murderous 16th century artist Caravaggio.  COLOR:  in confronting a colorful world artists in this class will consider the world around us in the natural and invented visual world ranging from elements from the Toledo Botanical Gardens, the Toledo Zoo, and Graffiti and attempt to incorporate practical color theory.  Join us for a summer adventure in "Drawing On: Fire, Light, and Color."

Discover the ancient process of lost wax investment casting in Bronze using state of the art 21st century techniques. Learn how to make a mold of almost anything, replicate the form in wax and magically transform into bronze with a wonderful patina. We have the astounding ancient and contemporary bronzes of The Toledo Museum of Art as a direct resource.  Tom Lingeman has been teaching and working in cast bronze for over 30 years.

A five week workshop in which students will explore hand-building and the potter’s wheel in the formulation of vessels using porcelain clay.  Unique high-fire luster glazes will be used in the embellishment and firing process.

This intense exploration of experimental studio practices and ideas will deal with concepts of light and color, as well as, technology and physical force. Drawing on untraditional surfaces and with untraditional media will be our focus. Students will discuss and investigate artistic processes inspired by modern masters and emerging contemporary artists.

This class utilizes the potential of dynamic media to create compelling images describing the phenomenology of light and its potential to create a complex interplay of forms and surfaces of varying translucency and opacity, that change over time. The class introduces the fundamentals of programming to visual artists using both Action-script in Adobe Flash and the open-source Processing programming environment.  (www.processing.org). This is an experimental approach towards image-making that utilizes the potential of moving images in describing the ephemeral quality of light and perception through the synthesis of the traditional concerns in image-making and software.

This hands-on workshop will provide an in depth exploration of color photography through the use of digital cameras. Participants will learn how to take advantage of manual camera controls to make better photographs while focusing on the creative potential of the medium. A variety of topics will be covered including lighting, composition, editing, file management, image correction, and digital printing.  In addition to group demonstrations and presentations, students will be given individual instruction to help them achieve personal goals.

The concepts of fire, light and color will be explored as they can be applied to the art of bookmaking. Along with creating samples and finished books using several different techniques, we will explore the beautiful technique of Paste painting on paper.  This ancient painting technique can create luminously transparent sheets of painted and patterned paper that can be used in the construction of handmade books.  A field trip to Ann Arbor’s Hollander’s Book and Paper is planned.  Students can expect to leave class with a portfolio that includes several sample books for each type of book construction technique introduced during the workshop, as well as new painting and simple low-tech printing techniques.
