2009 Anticipated Sponsored Awards
Amateur Radio Operators Award
Sponsor: Toledo Mobile Radio Association
For: Best projects involving radio, electronics, and/or computers
Awards: $100.00 plus a certificate to the first place awardee, $70.00 plus a certificate to the second place awardee, and $30.00 plus a certificate to the third place awardee, total award of $200.00  
Grades: 7-12. 

ASHRAE Energy Award
Sponsor: Toledo Chapter of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers)
For: Best projects related to energy and energy conservation
Award: $50.00 plus a certificate to the first place awardee, $35.00 plus a certificate to the second place awardee,  $20.00 plus a certificate to the third place awardee, and $15.00 plus a certificate for honorable mention, total award of $120.00
Grades: 7-12.

American Chemical Society Award (Note: the title of this award and its focus changes annually)
Sponsor: American Chemical Society, Toledo Section.
For: Best project that pertains ...
Award: $100.00 and certificate to first place awardee in 11-12th  grade, $50.00 and certificate to first place awardee in 9-10th grade, total award of $150.00.
Grades: 9-12.

Cell Biology Award 
Sponsor:  Department of Biological Sciences, University of Toledo
For: Best project in cell/molecular biology.
Award: $50.00 and certificate, total award $50.00
Grades: 9-12.   

College of Arts & Sciences BGSU District Science Day Scholarship  
Sponsor: Bowling Green State University
For: Best project in science, mathematics, engineering, pharmacy, or science/mathematics education.
Award: A $1000.00 scholarship dependent on BGSU enrollment with a major in any field of science or mathematics. The scholarship will be automatically renewed for three additional years provided recipient completes 24 hours per academic year, stays in one of the above majors, and maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.

Earth Science Award

Award:  $50 and a certificate to the first place awardee, total award $50.

Award Explanation:
This award is presented annually to a maximum of 3 students (grades 7-9) at NW District Science Day, whose projects demonstrate Earth Sensitivity by researching an environmental problem.  The participants should identify or test a response that has a positive impact on the environmental issue.

Examples are listed but are not limited to the following: endangered species, plant or animal habitat, chemical impact, soil, water, and other environmental factors.

Scope of Award:

  • Up to three awards will be awarded by special judges from the S.A.V.E. Board of Trustees.
  • Judges have the right to present or withhold the awards based on the caliber of the students’ research and presentation.

Award:

  • Notification of the Award will be issued at NW District Science Day Award Ceremony.
  • An official certificate will be presented at the annual S.A.V.E. Dessert Reception and Award Ceremony in May.
  • A $25.00 monetary award will be issued.

Full scholarship to attend one week of Summer Science Camp at the Lourdes Life Lab on the Lourdes College Campus in July or August.  Notification and registration by mail (value = $85).


Ecology (Environment) Award

For: Best project related to ecology and/or environmental science
Award: $50.00 and certificate, total award $100.00
Grades: 7-8 and 9-12

Geology Award Sponsor: Dept. of  Environmental Sciences,  University of Toledo
For: Best project relating to some aspect of geology
Award: $50.00 and a certificate to the first place awardee, and a certificate to the second place awardee, total award of $50.00. 
Grades: 7-12

Governor's Award for Excellence in Agriculture & Food Science Research Sponsor: NWDSD
For: Project must have a scientific application to a food or agricultural topic
Award: $25.00 plus a Governor's certificate to the first place awardee and a certificate to the second place awardee, total award of $25.00.
Grades: 7-12.

Governor's Award for Excellence in Biotechnology Research 
Sponsor: College of Engineering, University of Toledo
For: Best project in biotechnological research.
Award: $25.00 plus a Governor's certificate to the first place awardee and a certificate to the second place awardee, total award of $25.00.
Grades: 7-12.

Governor's Award for Excellence in Energy Research  
Sponsor: College of Engineering, University of Toledo
For: Best project relating to energy research.
Award: $25.00 plus a Governor's certificate to the first place awardee and a certificate to the second place awardee, total award of $25.00.
Grades 7-12.

Governor's Award for Excellence in the Environmental Sciences

For: Best project relating to the environmental sciences
Award: $25.00 plus a Governor's certificate to the first place awardee and a certificate to the second place awardee, total award of $25.00.

Governor's Award for Excellence in Information Science and Technology Research

For: Best project relating to information science and technology.
Award: $25.00 plus a Governor's certificate to the first place awardee and a certificate to the second place awardee, total award of $25.00.

Governor's Award for Excellence in Litter Prevention & Recycling Research

For: Best projects pertaining to litter prevention and recycling of materials.
Award: $25.00 a Governor's certificate to the first place awardee, and a certificate to the second place awardee
Grades: 7-12.

Governor's Award for Excellence in Manufacturing Sciences Research  
Sponsor: College of Engineering, University of Toledo
For: Best project relating to manufacturing science.
Award: $25.00 plus a Governor's certificate to the first place awardee and a certificate to the second place awardee, total award of $25.00.
Grades 7-12.

Governor's Award for Excellence in Materials Science Research  
Sponsor: College of Engineering, University of Toledo  
For: Best project involving materials science.   Award: $25.00 a Governor's certificate to the first place awardee, and a certificate to the second place awardee.  
Grades: 7-12.

Governor's Award for Excellence in Water Resources Research
Sponsor:  NWDSD
For: Best projects with research in water resources; aquatic ecology
Award:  $25.00 a Governor's certificate to the first place awardee, and a certificate to the second place awardee.
Grades: 7-12

Microbiology Award
Sponsor: Spartan Chemical 
For: Demonstrated excellence in microbiology, original and creative research
Award: $37.50 plus a certificate to the first place awardee, and a certificate to the second place awardee, total award of $75.00.
Grades: 7-8 and 9- 12


Naval Science Award
Sponsor: U.S. Department of Navy
For: Projects demonstrating excellence in any field of endeavor.  Recipients must be U.S. citizens.   Award: A certificate, medallion, and an student recognition award valued at $50 (gift certificate) to 2-3 awardees at 9-12 level and  certificates and medallions to 5-6 awardees at 7-8 level.   Grades: 7-8 and 9-12.


Northwest Ohio American Industrial Hygiene Award

Sponsor: NWO American Industrial Hygiene
For:  Recognition of outstanding research and knowledge in the area of environmental and/or occupational health and safety
Students recognized through the presentation of this award will have achieved excellence and displayed exemplary competence in one of the following areas: environmental science, occupational health/safety, hazardous materials management, toxicological studies, or environmental chemistry.
Some examples include research involving hearing protection, respirator   use, chemical exposure in the workplace or school, pollution prevention, indoor air quality, accidents or injuries, back safety and ergonomics, chemical management in the workplace, fire safety, emergency response, exposures to environmental factors such as heat and cold stress, electrical fields, and radiation, air and water monitoring,  and hazardous spills remediation.
Award: For grades 7-8: the first place awardee will receive $30.00 plus a certificate and the second place awardee will receive $20.00 plus a certificate. For grades 9-12: the first place awardee will receive $50.00 plus a certificate and the second place awardee will receive $30.00 plus a certificate, total award of $130.00. 
Grades: 7-8 and 9-12.


Outstanding Chemistry Award
Sponsor:  Department of Chemistry, University of Toledo  
For: Best project in chemistry or biochemistry Award: $50.00 plus a certificate to the first place awardee, total award of $100.00.  
Grades: 7-9 and 10-12.


Outstanding Physics Award

Sponsor:  Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Toledo 
For: Best physics and astronomy projects with the same criteria as regular judging, however, no engineering projects will be considered 
Awards: $50.00 and a certificate to first place awardee for best astronomy project in each grade category.
Awards: $50.00 and a certificate to first place awardee for best physics project in each grade category, total award of $200.00.
Grades: 7-8 and 9-12.


Outstanding Project in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
Sponsor: Mercy College Of Northwest Ohio
For: Best project in the investigation of biological systems
Award: $50.00 plus a certificate for 1st place and $25.00 and a certificate for 2nd place for grades 7-8.
$75.00 plus a certificate for 1st place and $50.00 and a certificate for 2nd place for grades 9-12, total award of $200.00. 
Grades: 7-8 and 9-12. 


Science of Food, Nutrition and Health Award
Sponsor: Toledo Dietetic Association
For: Best projects based on originality and creativity that demonstrate understanding of human nutrition and its relationship to good health 
Award: $40.00 plus a certificate to the first place awardee, and $30.00 and a certificate to the second place awardee, total award of $70.00.
Grades: 7-12


Stranahan Arboretum Environmental Science Award
Sponsor: Stranahan Arboretum, University of Toledo  
For: Best project using plants as the main component in a problem solving situation.
Award: $100.00 plus a certificate to first place awardee and a certificate to the second place awardee, total award of $100.00.
Grades: 7-12.


Tillotson UT District Science Day Scholarship  
Sponsor: The University of Toledo
For: Best project in science, mathematics, engineering, pharmacy, or science/mathematics education.
Award: A $1000.00 scholarship dependent on UT enrollment with a major in the fields of science, mathematics, engineering, pharmacy, or science/mathematics education. The scholarship will be automatically renewed for three additional years provided recipient completes 24 hours per academic year, stays in one of the above majors, and maintains a cummulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
Grades: 11-12.


Toledo Dental Society Award 

Sponsor: Toledo Dental Society   
For: Outstanding projects relating to dentistry or oral/dental health.
Award: $75.00 plus a certificate to the first place awardee, and $55.00 and a certificate to the second place awardee, total award of $130.00
Grades: 7-12


University of Toledo College of Medicine Biomedical Sciences Award            
Sponsor: College of Medicine and College of Graduate Studies, The University of Toledo  
For: Outstanding research in one of four areas: Cancer Biology; Infection, Immunology, and Transplantation; Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases; or Neuroscience and Neurological Disorders   Award: One award of $100 cash and certificate. Award recipient will be given special consideration for College of Medicine summer/research opportunities for undergraduates.  These include programs such as MedStarz and our summer undergraduate research/clinical fellowships. Two honorable mention certificates.   Grades: 9-12  



UT Department of Psychology Award
Sponsor:  Department of Psychology, The University of Toledo
For: Best projects related to the investigation, or demonstration, of basic processes underlying behavioral sciences.
Award: $50.00 for the first place awardee and $25.00 for the second place awardee, 7-8 and 9-12, total award of $150.00 Grades: 7-8 and 9-12.  


UT Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Award   
Sponsor:  College of Pharmacy, University of Toledo   For: Outstanding projects with a pharmacy or pharmaceutical sciences orientation. This may include the use of over-the-counter or prescription medications, herbal or complementary medicines, or home remedies.  Applicants may examine the use, misuse, adverse effects, or cost of using any such agent(s).   Award: $100.00 plus a certificate to the first place awardee, $50.00 plus a certificate to the second place awardee, total award of $150.00.   Grades: 7-12.


 Water Environment Science Award
Sponsor: Ohio Water Environment Association, Northwest Section
For: Outstanding project involving stream water quality, surface and ground water pollution, waste water treatment, industrial pollution, chemical treatment/removal and sludge treatment/removal projects
Award: $100.00 Series I U.S. Savings Bond plus a certificate to the first place awardee. 
Grades: 7-12.
