The BA in a Foreign Language

Students fulfill all requirements for the BA in the College of Arts and Sciences, earning a minimum of 124 credit hours. Students complete the Applied French, Applied German, or Business Spanish major, which consists of 33-34 hours of course work in the language; these hours include business courses in the language as well as composition, conversation, literature, and culture course requirements.

Program in French: Applied French Major

Language courses 13 hours
FREN 3010 - 3 hours - Conversation and Composition I
FREN 3020 - 3 hours - Conversation and Composition II (WAC)
FREN 4010 - 3 hours - Syntax and Stylistics I
FREN 4020 - 4 hours - Syntax and Stylistics II (WAC)

Literature course 3 hours
FREN 3220 - 3 hours - Survey of French Literature II or any other 3000/4000-level literature course

Culture and civilization courses 6 hours
Choose two of the following:

FREN 3410 - 3 hours - Survey of French Civilization I
FREN 3420 - 3 hours - Survey of French & Francophone Civilization II
FREN 4200 - 3 hours - Contemporary French & Francophone Civilization
FREN 4980 - 3 hours - Special Topics (as appropriate)

Applied course work (professional preparation) 6 hours
FREN 3170 - 3 hours - Business French

In addition students choose one of the following courses:
FREN 4070 - 3 hours - French Translation
FREN 4190 - 3 hours - Study Abroad

Students are encouraged to complete professional preparation courses as part of a study abroad program.
FREN 4980 - 3 hours - Special Topics (as appropriate)

Electives 6 hours
Students choose from French courses numbered 3000 or higher.
Total 34 hours

Program in German: Applied German Major

Language courses 13 hours
GERM 3010 - 3 hours - Conversation and Composition I
GERM 3020 - 3 hours - Conversation and Composition II (WAC)
GERM 4010 - 3 hours - Advanced Conversation and Composition I
GERM 4020 - 4 hours - Advanced Conversation and Composition II (WAC)
Literature course 3 hours
GERM 3200 - 3 hours - Survey of German Literature or any other 3000/4000-level literature course
Culture and civilization courses 6 hours
Choose two of the following:
GERM 3410 - 3 hours - Survey of German Civilization I
GERM 3420 - 3 hours - Survey of German Civilization II
GERM 4200 - 3 hours - German Culture and Civilization

Program in Spanish: Business Spanish Major

Language courses 12-13 hours
SPAN 3000 - 3 hours - Spanish Grammar Review
SPAN 3010 - 3 hours - Conversation and Composition I
SPAN 3020 - 3 hours - Conversation and Composition II (WAC)
SPAN 4000 - 3 hours - Advanced Spanish Grammar
Or Instead of SPAN 4000
SPAN 4010 - 4 hours - Syntax and Stylistics

Literature course 3 hours
Choose one:
SPAN 3220 - 3 hours - Survey of Spanish Literature II
SPAN 3280 - 3 hours - Survey of Latin American Literature II

Culture and civilization courses 6 hours
SPAN 3410 - 3 hours - Spanish Culture and Civilization
SPAN 3420 - 3 hours - Latin American Civilization
Applied course work (professional preparation) 6 hours
SPAN 3170 - 3 hours - Businesses Spanish
SPAN 4370 - 3 hours - Advanced Business Spanish

Electives 6 hours
