Dr. Daniel M. Johnson became the 15th president of The University of Toledo (UT) on July 1, 2001. On July 1, 2006, following UT’s merger with the Medical University of Ohio, Dr. Johnson stepped down to serve as president emeritus and distinguished university professor of public policy and economic development.

Johnson attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and philosophy/religion in 1963. He continued his education there and graduated in 1965 with a Master of Science degree in sociology. He received his doctoral degree in sociology with a specialization in demography from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1973.

Johnson began his college teaching career in 1965 at Blackburn College in Illinois. During his career he has held academic and administrative positions at Wichita State University, Sangamon State University (now University of Illinois-Springfield), Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond) and the University of North Texas where he served as dean of the School of Community Service (1991 – 1997).

Johnson came to Toledo from the University of Alaska Anchorage where he served as provost and the University’s chief academic officer from 1997- 2001.

Johnson has remained active as a scholar and has conducted research in demography and social policy. He has published three books, numerous book chapters, and approximately fifty articles and research reports. His presidential papers have been privately published in book form under the title of A Retrospective. He is currently working on a book on economic development for civic leaders and public officials.

Johnson is a native of Springfield, Ohio.  He and his wife, Elaine, have two sons and four grandchildren.
