    The Senate Finance Committee voted unanimously yesterday to approve the measure creating a united institution with a $650 million annual budget and 21,000 students. The full Senate is expected to welcome it just as warmly.

    The merger is set to take place July 1, but it would not be truly complete until the newly merged board of trustees is whittled from 17 members to nine by July 2, 2014.

    The union representing University of Toledo professors and those under the American Association of University Professors umbrella will retain their current contract when U.T. and the Medical University of Ohio merge.
    An agreement was signed Monday assuring those under the AAUP union contract at U.T. will keep the same benefits after the merger, including salaries and negotiated beneftis.
    Just a few months ago, the U.T. professors union along with two other unions at the school threatened to strike over contract disagreements.
    The merger between U.T. and M.U.O. is expected to be completed later this year.
